Bridging the Gap Between Science and Business

For many years, business and science were often viewed as two distinct worlds. Scientists were seen as people who are solely focused on expanding the boundaries of knowledge while business professionals are accountable for transforming that research into innovative products and services. In order to boost innovation, more emphasis is being put on bridging this gap between the two domains.

This is especially relevant in fields of science like medicine, where the capacity to make effective decisions under pressure is crucial for success. However, it is also true in more applied fields like agronomy, engineering or computer science. In the last case the ability to solve problems and think through alternatives can determine the success or failure of an organization.

The scientific method is also widely believed to be the most effective approach for companies. This is why it is essential to commit to testing and iterating to reach the desired results. Furthermore an understanding of risk and uncertainty is vital.

While there is some overlap between science and business but there are significant differences. For instance, whereas business speaks of sustainable profits, science focuses on sustainability in terms of resource use. Profit-seeking could lead to the overexploitation and exhaustion of an resource.

Both jobs require hard work and dedication. If you’ve got the right character and attitude, the rewards could be immense.
